RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University men's basketball team will travel to Winston-Salem, N.C. to compete in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA)/ Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Conference Challenge hosted by Winston-Salem State University on Friday, Nov. 15 through Saturday, Nov. 16 at the C.E. Gaines Center.
On Friday, Shaw and Morehouse will square off at 6 p.m., followed by a 2 p.m. tilt with Fort Valley State on Saturday.
The Bears opened up the season, splitting two contest during their Shaw Classic last weekend. Shaw defeated Frostburg State, 96-92 and fell to regional powerhouse and No. 4 team in the nation, West Liberty by the score of 132-85.
Averaging 90.5 points per game, the Bears offense is led by junior guard Greyson Kelley (Raleigh, NC) who hauled in 27 points against Frostburg State. Freshman Dhashon Dyson (Chicago, IL) follows averaging 20 points per contest after leading Shaw in scoring against No. 4 West Liberty with 25 points.
Senior sharpshooter DaVaughn Kelsie (Richmond, VA) follows with 16.5 points per contest. Fellow senior guard David Madol (Manchester, NH) leads the Bears on the glass with 7.5 rebounds per game and adding 14 points per outing offensively.
Morehouse enters the challenge 1-0 overall, coming off a 73-61 victory over Fisk on Nov. 12 in Atlanta, GA. Addison Miller paced the Maroon Tigers with 16 points while Marcus Moultry followed with 15 points and six rebounds.
Fort Valley State heads to Winston-Salem with a 1-2 overall record, most recently falling to Georgia Southwestern State on Nov. 12, 72-68. K'Viontae Williams averages 13.7 points per contest along with 5.7 rebounds to lead the Wildcats while Zachary Boggs follows with 12.7 per contest. Former longtime Johnson C. Smith assistant coach, Mark Sherrill leads the Wildcats in his second season.
Winston-Salem State joins Shaw as the other CIAA school competing in the SIAC/CIAA Challenge. The Rams are 0-1 overall falling at home to UNC Pembroke on Nov. 12, 75-64. Justice Kithcart paced the Rams with 17 points followed by Julius Barnes with 11 points off the bench. Former Shaw Bears head coach, Cleo Hill, Jr. leads WSSU in his second season at the helm.
