Salisbury,NC -- Avery Huggins totaled 25 points and Isaiah Buckley added 20, but the Shaw men's basketball team fell to the Livingstone Blue Bears 89-84 on the road Thursday.
The Bears struggle at the free throw line doomed their chances of coming away with the road win as they finished just 17-32 for the game.
Huggins and Buckley's stellar scoring performances led the Bears (16-7) in the contest. Huggins tacked on 12 rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Dreveon Scott also helped out with 13 points and two steals.
Huggins pulled down seven offensive rebounds to lead the Shaw offense which grabbed 13 boards and turned them into 10 second chance points.
Shaw forced 13 Livingstone turnovers while committing only nine themselves in Thursday's game. The Bears turned those takeaways into 25 points on the other end of the floor. Huggins' three steals led the way for Shaw.
How It Happened
Shaw started out the scoring by going on an 11-0 run, culminating in a bucket from Buckley, to take an early lead with 17:22 left in the first half. The Bears then surrendered that lead and entered halftime down 49-47.
Livingstone kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 61-54 advantage before Shaw went on a 6-0 run, finished off by Buckley's layup, to shrink the deficit to 61-60 with 10:50 to go in the contest. Livingstone responded and outscored the Bears the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 89-84. Shaw capitalized on eight Livingstone turnovers in the period, collecting 14 points off those turnovers.
