Second Half Surge Powers Bears Past Lane 72-59

[Highland Heights, KY] - Shaw scored 47 points in the second half alone, powering past Lane 72-59 in a game at the John L. Griffin/Lions Club Classic hosted by Northern Kentucky.

With the win, Shaw improves to 2-1 on the season, while Lane - who opened their season last night - falls to 0-2.

Three Bears reached double digits in scoring:  Eddie Dawson with 18, Tony Smith - who had been shut out last night - with 14, and Malik Alvin adding 12.  All of Alvin's points came in the explosive second half.

Shaw broke to an early lead in the first with a balanced attack - getting buckets from five different players in the first five and a half minutes, building an 11-5 lead.   With 11:50 left in the half, Latrail McCoy became the sixth Bear to score, sinking a three pointer to give the Bears a 17-10 lead.

The Dragons then reeled off seven straight points - five from Shoquan Stevens - to tie the game and turn the tide.  The Bears rebuilt a lead to four, with another three from McCoy with 6:10 left in the half.

The Bears would not score again for over three minutes, by which time Lane had built a seven point lead.  Gabriel McNeal's layup closed out the scoring for both teams and brought Shaw to within five at 30-25 at the half.

After exchanging buckets with Lane in the opening minutes of the second half,  the Bears finally made a move, outscoring the Dragons 8-1 over a four-minute period that allowed Shaw to build a four-point lead, 41-37.

After Jeromy Fason hit a jumper for Lane, cutting the Bear lead to 44-41, the Bears went on another scoring run, again outpacing the Dragons 8-1, rebuilding their lead to ten on a tip in from Junius Chaney that put the score at 52-42 with 8:54 left in the half.

With only 2:58 left in the game, Lane's Bell drove the lane and sank a layup that cut the Bear lead to five, 62-57.  The Bears would then score ten points - allowing the Dragons only two - in the closing minutes to finish with the 72-59 win.

A total of eight Bears made the scoring column on a 47.3 percent shooting night.  Shaw was only six for 20 from beyond the arc.

Lane struggled from all sections of the court, especially in the second half.  On the game, they managed only 32.8 percent from the floor - only hitting a fourth of their shots from the three-point line.  Bell was their leading scorer, finishing the game with 17 points.

Chaney finished the game one point and one rebound shy of a double-double, with nine points and nine rebounds.  Smith had five assists to lead Shaw, and Derrick Hunter had four.

Nick Jones led the Dragons on the boards, hauling in ten rebounds.  Anthony Collier had seven.  Collier and Tony Payne had three assists apiece to lead Lane.

The Bears continue their long stretch of road games with a trip to St. Petersburg, FL, to take part in the Eckerd College Thanksgiving Classic.  On Friday, November 25, they will take on Tampa at 5:30 p.m., and on Saturday, they play host Eckerd at 7:30 p.m.
