RALEIGH, NC --The Shaw men's basketball team went into halftime trailing Claflin 39-35, fought back from the deficit to tie the game at 71-71 and force overtime, but fell to the Panthers 80-79 at home Wednesday.
The Bears (13-6, 5-6) had three players score in double figures, led by Dreveon Scott, who had 25 points and five steals. Avery Huggins added a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds and Isaiah Buckley chipped in as well with 19 points.
Led by Alijah England's two offensive rebounds, Shaw did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 10 boards that resulted in eight second chance points.
The Shaw defense caused its share of mistakes in Wednesday's game, forcing 23 Claflin turnovers while committing 11. Those takeaways turned into 30 points on the other end of the floor. Scott's five steals led the way individually for the Bears.
How It Happened
After falling behind 39-30, Shaw went on a 5-0 run with 37 seconds left in the first half to narrow its deficit to 39-35, a score that would hold until halftime.
Claflin kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 51-46 advantage before Shaw went on a 14-0 run, finished off by Scott's layup, to seize a 60-51 lead with 5:36 to go in the contest. The Panthers then fought back to even things up at 71-71 and send the game to overtime. Shaw capitalized on 12 Claflin turnovers in the period, collecting 16 points off those turnovers.
Claflin then edged ahead in overtime, leaving Shaw behind 80-79 at the final buzzer.
