Shaw Controls Both Ends in Dominant Win Against Rams

Winston-Salem, NC  --The Shaw men's basketball team had 12 fewer turnovers than Winston-Salem in a 73-52 win against the Rams on the road Saturday.

The Bears (16-7, 8-7) had three players score in double figures, led by Avery Huggins, who had 21 points, seven rebounds and two steals. Dreveon Scott added 15 points and two steals and Isaiah Buckley chipped in as well with 14 points, nine assists and two steals.

Shaw's defense held Winston-Salem to only 38.6 percent shooting from the field, including 26.3 percent from beyond the arc. The Bears also limited Tyre Boykin to 3-of-12 shooting and 10 points in the game.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 31-22 advantage, Shaw went on a 7-0 run with 2:39 left in the first half to increase its lead to 38-22. The Bears then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 38-24 advantage. Shaw capitalized on 14 Winston-Salem turnovers in the period, turning them into 13 points on the other end of the floor.

Shaw started tacking on points in the second half almost immediately, going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Alijah England's jumper, to grow the lead to 45-24 with 16:51 to go in the contest. The Bears held onto that lead for the rest of the game for the 73-52 win. Shaw took care of business in the paint, recording 22 of its 35 points in the lane.
