RALEIGH, NC - Shaw University softball begins a new chapter this weekend as the Lady Bears open the 2026 softball season with back-to-back doubleheaders at the campus of William Peace University in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Shaw will officially begin its season on Friday, Feb. 13, facing William Peace in a doubleheader scheduled for 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. The Lady Bears will return to the diamond on Saturday, Feb. 14, taking on Lees-McRae College at William Peace University, again with first pitch times set for 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
The weekend marks the debut of new head coach Theresa Stephens, who takes the reins of the program looking to usher in a new era of Shaw softball. Stephens inherits a roster blending veteran leadership with a large incoming class, as the Lady Bears feature 13 newcomers in 2026.
Among the experienced returners are senior leaders Iona Davis and Syhia Marks, both expected to play pivotal roles on and off the field this season. Shaw also returns key veterans including Jordan Booker, Hailey Stanley and Elyssa Lapena, providing stability and experience to complement the youthful core.
William Peace will also be opening its 2026 campaign Friday against the Lady Bears, making the matchup an early-season measuring stick for both programs. Lees-McRae is scheduled to open its season one day earlier, on Feb. 12, against Catawba College before facing Shaw on Saturday.
The four-game weekend slate provides the Lady Bears an immediate opportunity to set the tone for the season while building chemistry under new leadership. With a mix of seasoned returners and fresh talent, Shaw will look to establish its identity early as the 2026 campaign gets underway.
