Softball Splits Twin Bill With JCSU

RALEIGH, N.C. — The Shaw University Lady Bears softball split a CIAA doubleheader with Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls softball Friday afternoon at Worthdale Park, rallying for a dramatic Game 1 victory before falling just short in the nightcap.

In the opener, Shaw delivered one of its most impressive comebacks of the season, erasing a 7-0 deficit to secure a 9-7 win.

Johnson C. Smith jumped out early with three runs in the first inning and added four more in the second to take a commanding lead. The Lady Bears responded with resilience, gradually chipping away before breaking through late.

Trailing entering the bottom of the sixth, Shaw erupted with a decisive rally to take its first lead of the game. The Lady Bears capitalized on timely hitting and defensive miscues, plating multiple runs in the frame to complete the comeback.

Offensively, Shaw totaled eight hits in the contest. Tyler Lewis paced the effort with a 2-for-2 performance, including a triple and two runs scored, while Hailey Stanley added two hits, highlighted by a home run and two RBIs. Cyndia Dobbins and Syhia Marks each recorded hits, with Marks driving in a run, and SeTara McGee added two RBIs to help fuel the late surge.

Shaw's pitching and defense settled in after the early innings, holding Johnson C. Smith scoreless over the final frames to preserve the win.

In game two, Shaw once again showed fight after falling behind early but came up just short in a 9-8 loss.

The Lady Bears produced a strong offensive showing with 10 hits. Syhia Marks led the way with a dominant 3-for-4 performance, including a home run, four RBIs and two runs scored. Cyndia Dobbins added three hits and two RBIs, while Alyssa Gaucin, Tyler Lewis, Sierra Scott, and Hailey Stanley each contributed hits in the effort.

Despite the offensive production, Johnson C. Smith used a big fourth inning to create separation and held off multiple Shaw comeback attempts. The Lady Bears cut into the deficit late and brought the tying run within reach, but ultimately fell just short of completing the sweep.
