FAYETTEVILLE, NC --D'Ayzha Akinson scored 14 points and Zaniyyah Ross-Barnes had 14 more, but the Lady Bears fell to the Fayetteville State Broncos 70-42 on the road Tuesday.
The Lady Bears (8-14, 5-7) had two players score in double figures, led by Akinson, who had 14 points and six rebounds. Ross-Barnes added a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds and Mahogany Collins added two steals and five blocks.
Shaw grabbed 49 rebounds in Tuesday's game compared to Fayetteville State's 47, led by Kaylee Milburn's 14 boards. The Lady Bears also cleaned up the offensive glass, turning 15 rebounds into one second chance points.
Shaw forced 13 Fayetteville State turnovers. The Bears turned those takeaways into eight points on the offensive end of the floor. Collins' two steals led the way for Shaw.
How It Happened
Shaw struggled out of the gate, falling behind 14-6 at the end of the first quarter.
The Lady Bears continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 30-18 halftime deficit.
Fayetteville State continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 38-22 advantage before Shaw went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a three from Maiya Bumbray, to trim its deficit to 38-27 with 3:41 to go in the third. Fayetteville State countered and stretched its lead to 49-27 heading into the fourth. Shaw played well near the basket, scoring six of its nine points in the paint.
Fayetteville State kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 50-27 advantage before Shaw went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Jernye McZeal's steal and layup, to shrink the deficit to 50-32 with 7:26 to go in the contest. Fayetteville State responded and outscored the Lady Bears the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 70-42. Shaw got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring five of its 15 total points.
