Lady Bears Secures 63-58 Victory Over Claflin.

RALEIGH, NC --The Shaw women's basketball team rallied from a 50-47 deficit after the third quarter to beat the Claflin Panthers 63-58 at home Saturday.

The Lady Bears (8-13, 5-6) had two players score in double figures, led by Elisha Quinn, who had 19 points and two steals. D'Ayzha Akinson tacked on 16 points and eight rebounds and Zaniyyah Ross-Barnes added eight points, 14 rebounds and two blocks.

Shaw grabbed 45 rebounds in Saturday's game compared to Claflin's 31, led by Ross-Barnes' 14 boards.

Shaw did a great job disrupting Claflin shots in the contest, coming away with five blocks. Mahogany Collins led the way individually for the Lady Bears with three rejections.

How It Happened

After falling behind 5-2, Shaw went on an 8-0 run with 7:13 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Quinn, to take a 10-5 lead. The Lady Bears then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 16-12 advantage.

The Lady Bears could not maintain their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing 37-35.

Claflin continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 48-42 advantage before Shaw went on a 5-0 run to trim its deficit to 48-47 with 46 seconds to go in the third. Claflin countered and stretched its lead to 50-47 heading into the fourth. Shaw turned five offensive rebounds into five second chance points on the way to scoring 12 total points in the quarter.

Shaw then came back to even it up at 58-58 before going on a 5-0 run to seize a 63-58 lead with 11 seconds to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game. Shaw took advantage of five Claflin turnovers in the quarter, scoring six points off of those takeaways.

» The Lady Bears held the Panthers to only 32.8 percent shooting from the field.
» Shaw had a 45-31 edge on the boards in the win.
» The Lady Bears were active in affecting shots on the defensive end, recording five blocks as a team.
» Elisha Quinn led the Lady Bears with 19 points.
» Shaw got a game-high 14 rebounds from Zaniyyah Ross-Barnes.
