RALEIGH, NC --Devin Sims and Tamari Rowland both recorded double-doubles to help lead the Shaw men's basketball team past the VUL Dragons 120-72 at home Thursday.
The Bears (9-3) had seven players score in double figures, led by Avery Huggins, who had 18 points, six rebounds and four assists. Sims tacked on a double-double from the bench with 16 points and 11 rebounds and Rowland chipped in as well with a double-double off the bench with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Shaw out-rebounded 56-20 in Thursday's game, paced by 12 boards from Rowland. The Bears also grabbed 25 offensive rebounds and scored 31 second chance points.
Shaw forced 16 turnovers while committing 11 themselves in Thursday's game. The Bears turned those takeaways into 28 points on the offensive end of the floor. Avion Pinner led the way individually with three steals.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 33-18 advantage, Shaw went on a 9-0 run with 10:29 left in the first half to increase its lead to 42-18. The Bears then added nine points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 64-31 advantage. Shaw relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down nine shots to account for 27 of its 64 points.
Following intermission, Shaw kept widening that lead, expanding it to 104-54 before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Sims' layup, to grow the lead to 109-54 with 5:31 to go in the contest. The Dragons added a trio of three's to narrow the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Bears still cruised the rest of the way for the 120-72 win. Shaw took care of business in the paint, recording 38 of its 56 points in the lane.
