Second Half Drought Dooms Lady Bears Against Broncos

RALEIGH, NC --The Shaw women's basketball team kept Fayetteville State to just 17.4 percent from deep in a 4-for-23 shooting performance, but fell 65-51 to the Broncos at home Thursday.

Mahogany Collins led the Lady Bears (5-11, 3-4) with six points, eight rebounds and six blocks. Zaniyyah Ross-Barnes also tacked on nine points, 10 rebounds and two blocks from the bench and D'Ayzha Akinson helped out with nine points.

Shaw collected 47 rebounds in Thursday's game compared to Fayetteville State's 44, led by Ross-Barnes' 10 boards. The Lady Bears also put in work on the offensive glass, turning 12 rebounds into seven second chance points.

Shaw's defense held Fayetteville State to only 17.4 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 31.6 percent from the field.

How It Happened

Shaw started out the scoring by going on a 7-0 run, culminating in a bucket from Kaylee Milburn, to take an early lead with 7:38 left in the first quarter. The Lady Bears then maintained that lead and entered the quarter break with a 19-12 advantage. Shaw relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 19 points.

The Lady Bears maintained their lead in the game's second frame and entered halftime with a 30-27 edge. Shaw dominated in the paint, scoring six of its 11 points close to the basket.

Shaw then lost its advantage in the third quarter and trailed the Broncos 45-44 entering the fourth. Shaw took advantage of two Fayetteville State turnovers in the quarter, scoring four points off of takeaways.

Shaw could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 65-51.
