SALISBURY, NC --The Shaw women's basketball team got a 22-point showing from the bench, but fell 74-51 to the Livingstone Blue Bears on the road Saturday.
Mahogany Collins led the Lady Bears (5-12, 3-5) with 10 rebounds and eight blocks. Kaylee Milburn also added 19 points and nine rebounds and D'Ayzha Akinson chipped in as well with six points, eight rebounds and four steals.
Led by Akinson's six offensive rebounds, Shaw did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 19 boards that resulted in 11 second chance points.
Shaw did a great job disrupting Livingstone shots in the contest, coming away with nine blocks. Collins' eight rejections led the way individually for the Lady Bears who is toward the top of the nations average in blocks per game.
How It Happened
After falling behind 17-12, Shaw went on a 5-0 run with 1:11 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Kiara Shepherd, to tie the game at 17, a score that would hold for the rest of the period. Shaw did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 10 of its 17 points close to the basket.
The Blue Bears then took control in the second quarter and the Lady Bears entered halftime behind 36-28.
Livingstone continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 42-33 advantage before Shaw went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Milburn, to trim its deficit to 42-38 with 4:06 to go in the third. Livingstone countered and stretched its lead to 52-46 heading into the fourth. Shaw's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled eight of the team's 18 third-quarter points.
Shaw could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 74-51. Shaw took advantage of two Livingstone turnovers in the quarter, scoring two points off of those takeaways.
