Shaw Blows Past VUL 76-23

GREENVILLE,SC  -- A strong defensive effort from the Lady Bears allowed Shaw to hold VUL to just 13 percent shooting from the field as the Lady Bears beat the Dragons 76-23 on Sunday evening.

The Lady Bears (6-12) had three players score in double figures, led by Zaniyyah Ross-Barnes, who put together a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Kiara Shepherd added 13 points off the bench and Kaylee Milburn helped out with 10 points.

Led by Ross-Barnes' three offensive rebounds, Shaw did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 15 boards that resulted in 13 second chance points.

Shaw forced 32 turnovers while committing 15 themselves in Sunday's game. The Lady Bears turned those takeaways into 33 points on the other end of the floor. Elisha Quinn led the way individually with four steals.

How It Happened

The Lady Bears entered the quarter break with a 17-6 advantage. Shaw capitalized on eight turnovers in the period, turning them into eight points on the other end of the floor.

Shaw built that first quarter lead to 27-9 before going on a 9-0 run starting at the 3:55 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Quinn, to increase its lead to 36-9, a score that would hold until halftime. Shaw was strong from deep in the period, knocking down three three-point shots to account for nine of its 19 points.

Shaw continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 12-0 run to expand its lead further to 48-11 with 3:00 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Lady Bears added four points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 55-14 edge. Shaw played well near the basket, scoring 14 of its 19 points in the paint.

Shaw kept widening that lead, expanding it to 69-23 before going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Shepherd's layup, to grow the lead to 76-23 with 10 seconds to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game.
