RALEIGH, NC --The Shaw women's basketball team fell to the Winston-Salem Rams 62-58 in overtime at home Wednesday.
The Lady Bears (6-13, 3-6) had four players score in double figures, led by Skylar Adams, who had 16 points. Elisha Quinn tacked on 13 points and two steals and Kaylee Milburn chipped in as well with a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Led by Milburn's six offensive rebounds, Shaw did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 17 boards that resulted in 24 second chance points.
Shaw did a great job disrupting Winston-Salem shots in the contest, coming away with 13 blocks. Mahogany Collins' nine rejections led the way individually for the Lady Bears.
How It Happened
After falling behind 3-0, Shaw went on a 5-0 run with 6:05 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Quinn, to take a 5-3 lead. Winston-Salem then responded to tie things up at 7-7 heading into the second quarter. Shaw got a great contribution from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for four of its seven total points.
Winston-Salem then took a 23-11 lead before Shaw responding by going on a 7-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Adams, to narrow its deficit to 23-18. The Bears were unable to narrow the gap any further, but did not lose ground either and entered halftime with a 25-20 deficit.
After intermission, Shaw cut its deficit to 27-24 before going on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a three from Quinn, to grab a 31-27 lead with 5:39 to go in the third. Winston-Salem responded to seize a 41-39 lead entering the fourth quarter. Shaw played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 19 points in the paint.
Winston-Salem kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 49-46 advantage before Shaw went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Quinn's three, to seize a 51-49 lead with 2:21 to go in the fourth. The Rams then fought back to even things up at 52-52 and send the game to overtime. Shaw fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 13 points.
Winston-Salem then edged ahead in overtime, leaving Shaw behind 62-58 at the final buzzer.
