RALEIGH, NC - The Shaw University Lady Bears softball team strung together enough hits and defensive stops to get past a feisty Vorhees Tigers squad 7-2 Wednesday afternoon at Worthdale Park. Shaw improves to 5-12 overall on the season with the non-conference victory and has now on their last four home games.
After a quick three up and three down top of the first, the Lady Bears would get a runner on second before she was caught stealing to end the inning. Shaw would do most of its damage in the second innning scoring three runs with hits from Brianna Chavis, Ayanni Williams and
Virginia Ollison.
Shaw would increase its lead to 5-0 with
D'Amani Gadson and Chavis scoring in the bottom of the third before going scoreless the next two innings.
The Tigers would scratch across two runs in the top of the sixth to slice the Lady Bears lead to 5-2 before Shaw answered in the bottom of the frame with two insurance runs from
Nataya Truitt and
Armani Boozer.
Gadson would shut the door on any comeback for the Tigers with a 1-2-3 top of the seven closing out the 7-2 win for Shaw.
Gadson pitched all seven innings of the contest earning the win inside the circle. Compete stats to follow.
Shaw returns to action Saturday April 6 when they host CIAA foe Winston-Salem State in a Southern Division DH. First pitch is slated for 12 PM inside the Walnut Creek Softball Complex.
