SALISBURY, NC --The Shaw women's basketball team fell to the Livingstone Blue Bears 68-62 in overtime on the road Saturday.
TheĀ Lady Bears (11-12, 6-8) had three players score in double figures, led by Alexis Radcliff, who had 18 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Zaniyyah Ross-Barnes tacked on a double-double from the bench with 16 points and 13 rebounds and Alliyah Chaplin chipped in as well with 10 points and two steals.
Radcliff pulled down five offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Shaw, grabbing 12 boards and turning them into 10 second chance points.
The Shaw defense caused its share of mistakes in Saturday's game, forcing 23 Livingstone turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 16 points on the offensive end of the floor. Radcliff's three steals led the way individually for the Lady Bears.
How It Happened
After falling behind 14-7, Shaw went on a 5-0 run with 2:04 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Ross-Barnes, to narrow its deficit to 14-12. Livingstone answered back and added to its lead, leaving the Lady Bears down 16-12 entering the second quarter.
Livingstone kept adding to that lead, building a 23-15 advantage before Shaw went on an 8-0 run to tie the game at 23. The Lady Bears then broke the tie and seized a 29-28 halftime lead. Shaw forced five Livingstone turnovers in the period and turned them into six points.
The Lady Bears had lost that lead by the end of the third quarter and entered the fourth frame with the score tied 43-43. Shaw played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 14 points in the paint.
Livingstone then snagged a 51-48 advantage before Shaw responded by going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Naomi Winston-Ellis' layup, to seize a 54-51 lead with 25 seconds to go in the fourth.
Ross-Barnes hit a three point basket with 4.5 left in regulation before the Blue Bears then fought back to even things up at 57-57 and send the game to overtime with a three pointer with less than a second left on the clock. Shaw took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 14 points in the paint.
Livingstone then took control in overtime with multiple three point baskets and won 68-62.
