RALEIGH, NC --Dreveon Scott totaled 35 points to help lead the Shaw men's basketball team past the Bluefield State Big Blue 94-92 at home Thursday.
The Bears (7-7, 2-1) had four players score in double figures, led by Scott, who had 35 points, five steals and two blocks. Jermaine Vereen added a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds and Trent McIntyre helped out with 14 points and nine rebounds.
Elijah Scranton pulled down four offensive rebounds to pace the Shaw offense which grabbed 11 boards and turned them into eight second chance points.
Shaw did a great job disrupting Bluefield State shots in the contest, coming away with 13 blocks. Vereen's six rejections led the way individually for the Bears.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 24-19 advantage, Shaw went on a 6-0 run with 8:11 left in the first half to increase its lead to 30-19. The Bears then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 49-45 advantage. Shaw did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 30 of its 49 points close to the basket.
The Big Blue proceeded to tie things up at 49-49 before Shaw went on a 7-0 run to seize a 56-49 lead with 16:52 to go in the contest. The Big Blue narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over tying the game at 92-92, before Dee Barnes added two free throws late and the Shaw defense saw the Big Blue's attempt to tie go off the rim as the Bears held on for the 94-92 win.
Shaw took care of business in the paint, recording 26 of its 45 points in the lane.
