PETERSBURG, VA --The Shaw women's basketball team got a 28-point showing from the bench, but fell 82-49 to the Virginia State Trojans on the road Sunday in a non-conference matchup.
Mahogany Collins led the Lady Bears (2-1) with two points, eight rebounds and four blocks. Zaniyyah Ross-Barnes added 10 points, seven rebounds and two blocks and Kiara Shepherd chipped in as well with four points and four steals.
Collins pulled down four offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Shaw, grabbing 11 boards and turning them into two second chance points.
Shaw forced 20 Virginia State turnovers. The Lady Bears turned those takeaways into 11 points on the offensive end of the floor. Shepherd's four steals led the way for Shaw.
How It Happened
Shaw struggled out of the gate, falling behind 24-8 at the end of the first quarter.
The Bears continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 40-16 halftime deficit.
Shaw's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Bears faced a 60-35 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Shaw's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled 10 of the team's 19 third-quarter points.
Shaw could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 82-49. Shaw took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 12 of its 14 points in the paint.
