WILSON, NC --Zaniyyah Ross-Barnes registered a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds, but the Shaw women's basketball team fell to the Barton Bulldogs 73-62 on the road Thursday.
In addition to Ross-Barnes' double-double, the Lady Bears (2-2) were led by Keibra Hopkins, who put up 15 points, seven rebounds and four assists, and by Kiara Shepherd, who added three points and three blocks coming off the bench.
Shaw collected 49 rebounds in Thursday's game compared to Barton's 38, led by Ross-Barnes' 12 boards. The Lady Bears also cleaned up the offensive glass, turning 20 rebounds into 18 second chance points.
Shaw did a great job disrupting Barton shots in the contest, coming away with six blocks. Shepherd's three rejections led the way individually for the Lady Bears.
How It Happened
After falling behind 14-4, Shaw went on a 5-0 run with 3:17 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Shepherd, to narrow its deficit to 14-9. Barton answered back and added to its lead, leaving the Bears down 21-12 entering the second quarter.
Shaw kept the Bulldogs from increasing their lead before going on a 5-0 run, highlighted by a three from Skylar Adams, to narrow its deficit to 24-20. Barton responded and expanded its lead, leaving the Lady Bears trailing 35-24 heading into halftime.
After intermission, Shaw cut its deficit to 43-36 before going on a 5-0 run to trim its deficit to 43-41 with 1:24 to go in the third. Barton countered and stretched its lead to 45-41 heading into the fourth. Shaw took advantage of five Barton turnovers in the quarter, scoring five points off of takeaways.
Shaw could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 73-62. Shaw took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 12 of its 21 points in the paint.
