Shaw Blows Past ECSU 70-57

RALEIGH, NC --Zaniyyah Ross-Barnes registered a double-double with 17 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Shaw women's basketball team past the Elizabeth City State Vikings 70-57 at home Sunday.

In addition to Ross-Barnes' double-double, the Lady Bears (3-2, 1-0) were led by Keibra Hopkins, who had 16 points and seven rebounds, and by Mahogany Collins, who added two points, eight rebounds, four assists and five blocks.

Shaw took advantage of excellent ball movement in Sunday's game, piling up 16 assists on 26 made field goals. Individually, Skylar Adams lent a helping hand the most for the Lady Bears with five assists.

Shaw did a great job disrupting Elizabeth City State shots in the contest, coming away with 11 blocks. Collins' five rejections led the way individually for the Lady Bears.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 14-13 advantage, Shaw went on a 6-0 run with 1:16 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Kiara Shepherd, to increase its lead to 20-13, a score that would hold for the rest of the period. Shaw relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 20 points.

Shaw kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 9-0 run starting at the 6:37 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Maiya Bumbray, to increase its lead to 34-20. The Vikings cut into that lead, but the Lady Bears still enjoyed a 40-30 advantage heading into halftime. Shaw dominated in the paint, scoring 10 of its 20 points close to the basket.

Following intermission, Shaw continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 48-37 before going on an 8-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Collins, to expand its lead further to 56-37 with 5:17 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Vikings had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Lady Bears still entered the fourth quarter with a 60-49 edge. Shaw played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 20 points in the paint.

Shaw kept its lead intact before going on a 9-0 run to grow the lead to 70-52 with 1:57 to go in the contest. The Vikings narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Lady Bears still cruised the rest of the way for the 70-57 win.

Shaw will take a few days off for Thanksgiving before returning to action on November 29 as they face Nova Southeastern. Tip-off is slated for 2 PM in Florida.
