FORT LAUDERDALE, FL --The Shaw women's basketball team got a 17-point showing from the bench, but fell 63-56 to the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish at Rick Case Arena Saturday.
The Lady Bears (3-4) had two players score in double figures, led by Keibra Hopkins, who had 17 points, six rebounds and three blocks. Zaniyyah Ross-Barnes tacked on a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds and Mikyah Finley added five points and six rebounds.
Led by Jernye McZeal's three offensive rebounds, Shaw did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 10 boards that resulted in 10 second chance points.
The Shaw defense held Palm Beach Atlantic shooters to only 35.3 percent from the field, including 21.9 percent from three-point range. The Lady Bears also kept Gabrielle Wener to 6-of-20 shooting in the game.
How It Happened
After falling behind 10-6, Shaw went on an 11-0 run with 5:02 left in the first quarter to take a 17-10 lead. The Lady Bears then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 17-13 advantage. Shaw capitalized on four Palm Beach Atlantic turnovers in the period, turning them into seven points on the other end of the floor.
The Lady Bears could not maintain their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing 29-27.
Shaw's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Lady Bears faced a 53-41 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Shaw played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 14 points in the paint.
Palm Beach Atlantic kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 59-43 advantage before Shaw went on an 8-0 run, finished off by Ross-Barnes' layup, to shrink the deficit to 59-51 with 5:25 to go in the contest. The Lady Bears kept their comeback going, but Palm Beach Atlantic managed to hold on for the 63-56 win. Shaw got up and down the court quickly in the quarter, scoring three fast break points.
