RALEIGH, NC --Keibra Hopkins scored 14 points and Elisha Quinn had 12 more, but the Lady Bears fell to the Virginia State Trojans 50-41 at home Monday.
The Lady Bears (3-5, 2-1) had two players score in double figures, led by Hopkins, who had 14 points, seven rebounds and two steals. Quinn tacked on 12 points off the bench and Zaniyyah Ross-Barnes added nine points, 12 rebounds and two blocks.
Kaylee Milburn pulled down five offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Shaw, grabbing 12 boards and turning them into six second chance points.
The Shaw defense caused its share of mistakes in Monday's game, forcing 19 Virginia State turnovers. Those takeaways turned into eight points on the other end of the floor. Hopkins' two steals led the way individually for the Lady Bears.
How It Happened
Shaw kept it close in the first quarter, but entered the second frame down 8-7.
Shaw kept the Trojans from increasing their lead before going on a 9-0 run, highlighted by a three from Hopkins, to take a 22-14 lead. The Trojans cut into that lead, but the Lady Bears still enjoyed a 22-17 advantage heading into halftime. Shaw was strong from deep in the period, knocking down three three-point shots to account for nine of its 15 points.
Shaw then lost its advantage in the third quarter and trailed the Trojans 42-35 entering the fourth. Shaw played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 13 points in the paint.
Shaw could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 50-41. Shaw took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring four of its six points in the paint.
