RALEIGH, NC --The Shaw women's basketball team got a 24-point showing from the bench, but fell 70-54 to the Livingstone Blue Bears at home Saturday.
The Lady Bears (9-8, 4-4) had two players score in double figures, led by Alexis Radcliff, who had 11 points and nine rebounds. Naomi Winston-Ellis added 10 points and Zaniyyah Ross-Barnes added four points, 11 rebounds and four blocks.
Led by Radcliff's three offensive rebounds, Shaw did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 12 boards that resulted in eight second chance points.
Shaw did a great job disrupting Livingstone shots in the contest, coming away with five blocks. Ross-Barnes' four rejections led the way individually for the Lady Bears.
How It Happened
After jumping out to an 8-7 advantage, Shaw went on a 5-0 run with 4:00 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Raneem Elbarky, to increase its lead to 13-7. The Lady Bears then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 20-15.
The Lady Bears continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 45-27 halftime deficit.
Livingstone continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 52-30 advantage before Shaw went on a 10-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Elbarky, to trim its deficit to 52-40 with 41 seconds to go in the third. The Lady Bears were unable to cut further into the deficit, but did not cede ground to Livingstone either and entered the fourth quarter trailing 54-42. Shaw took advantage of five Livingstone turnovers in the quarter, scoring five points off of takeaways.
Shaw could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 70-54. Shaw fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 12 points.
