CE GAINES CENTER, Winston --The Shaw women's basketball team fought back from a 44-41 deficit after the third quarter to take down the Winston-Salem Rams 57-51 on the road Wednesday.
The Lady Bears (10-8, 5-4) had two players score in double figures, led by Alexis Radcliff, who had 18 points and two steals. Zaniyyah Ross-Barnes added a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds and Alliyah Chaplin added five points and eight rebounds.
Ross-Barnes pulled down four offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Shaw, grabbing 12 boards and turning them into 15 second chance points.
The Shaw defense caused its share of mistakes in Wednesday's game, forcing 17 Winston-Salem turnovers. Those takeaways turned into nine points on the offensive end of the floor. Tre'Zha Muhammad led the way individually for the Lady Bears with four steals.
How It Happened
Shaw started off strong, putting together a 16-10 lead heading into the second quarter. Shaw did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 10 of its 16 points close to the basket.
The Lady Bears could not maintain their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing 32-24.
After intermission, Shaw cut its deficit to 34-28 before going on a 6-0 run to tie things up at 34 with 7:08 to go in the third. The Lady Bears could not advance their rally further as the Rams took a 44-41 lead into the fourth quarter. Shaw played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 17 points in the paint.
Shaw narrowed its deficit to 45-43 before going on a 6-0 run to seize a 49-45 lead with 4:39 to go in the contest. The Lady Bears kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 57-51 win. Shaw took advantage of four Winston-Salem turnovers in the quarter, scoring four points off of those takeaways.
