RALEIGH, NC --Zaniyyah Ross-Barnes registered a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Shaw women's basketball team over the Saint Augustine's Falcons 64-62 at home Saturday.
In addition to Ross-Barnes' double-double, the Lady Bears (11-8, 6-4) were led by Alexis Radcliff, who totaled 13 points and seven rebounds, and by Naomi Winston-Ellis, who added 11 points and five assists.
The Shaw offense was very productive from three point land, making nine threes on 26 attempts. Winston-Ellis was the most prolific shooter for the Bears, draining three treys in the contest.
Shaw did a great job disrupting Saint Augustine's shots in the contest, coming away with five blocks. Ross-Barnes' five rejections led the way individually for the Lady Bears.
How It Happened
After playing to a 5-5 tie early in the game, Shaw went on a 5-0 run with 5:40 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Ross-Barnes, to take a 10-5 lead. The Lady Bears then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 17-13.
Shaw then started off the second quarter by going on a 10-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Radcliff, to take a 23-17 lead. The Falcons cut into that lead, but the Lady Bears still enjoyed a 27-26 advantage heading into halftime. Shaw dominated in the paint, scoring eight of its 14 points close to the basket.
Saint Augustine's then took a 37-32 lead following intermission before Shaw went on a 7-0 run to grab a 39-37 lead with 5:25 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Lady Bears added three points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 46-41 edge. Shaw's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled five of the team's 19 third-quarter points.
Saint Augustine's proceeded to take a 52-51 lead before Shaw went on a 7-0 run, finished off by Lojain Elfatairy's three, to seize a 58-52 lead with 4:58 to go in the contest. The Falcons narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, before Winston-Ellis added the game winner with less than 10 seconds left on a designed inbounds play.Â
