CHARLOTTE, NC --The Shaw women's basketball team got a 16-point showing from the bench, but fell 71-49 to the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls on the road Tuesday.
The Lady Bears (11-9, 6-5) had two players score in double figures, led by Elisha Quinn, who had 14 points. Alexis Radcliff added 13 points and six rebounds and Alliyah Chaplin added seven points.
Shaw's defense held Johnson C. Smith to only 39.1 percent shooting from the field. The Lady Bears also limited Ciara Harris to 4-of-15 shooting and nine points in the game.
How It Happened
After falling behind 12-9, Shaw went on a 5-0 run with 2:17 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Tre'Zha Muhammad, to take a 14-12 lead. Johnson C. Smith then responded to tie things up at 15-15 heading into the second quarter. Shaw relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 15 points.
The Golden Bulls then took control in the second quarter and the Lady Bears entered halftime behind 35-27.
Shaw's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Lady Bears faced a 52-37 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Shaw played well near the basket, scoring six of its 10 points in the paint.
Johnson C. Smith kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 56-39 advantage before Shaw went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Quinn's three, to shrink the deficit to 56-44 with 6:26 to go in the contest. Johnson C. Smith responded and outscored the Lady Bears the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 71-49. Shaw fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 12 points.
