ORANGEBURG, S.C. --The Shaw women's basketball team got a 28-point performance from the bench, but fell 87-77 to the Claflin Panthers on the road Saturday.
The Lady Bears (11-10, 6-6) had three players score in double figures, led by Zaniyyah Ross-Barnes, who had 20 points, seven rebounds and three blocks. Elisha Quinn tacked on 14 points and four assists off the bench and Lojain Elfatairy chipped in as well with 10 points.
The Shaw offense was very productive from three point land, making 11 threes on 26 attempts. Ross-Barnes was the most prolific shooter for the Lady Bears, draining three treys in the contest.
The Shaw defense was a problem in Saturday's game, forcing 15 Claflin turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 14 points on the offensive end of the floor. Camilla Barreno's three steals led the way individually for the Lady Bears.
How It Happened
Shaw struggled out of the gate, falling behind 29-18 at the end of the first quarter.
Claflin kept adding to that lead, building a 41-26 advantage before Shaw went on a 9-0 run, highlighted by a three from Naomi Winston-Ellis, to narrow its deficit to 41-35. The Lady Bears continued to chip away, reducing the Claflin lead to 44-40 heading into the break.
Shaw came out of halftime on fire, going on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Ross-Barnes, to grab a 45-44 lead with 8:55 to go in the third. Claflin responded to seize a 67-60 lead entering the fourth quarter. Shaw knocked down five three-pointers in the quarter to score 15 of its 20 total points.
Claflin kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing an 81-70 advantage before Shaw went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Elfatairy's three, to shrink the deficit to 81-75 with 2:52 to go in the contest. Claflin responded and outscored the Lady Bears the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 87-77.
