FAYETTEVILLE, NC --The Shaw women's basketball team got a 15-point showing from the bench, but fell 64-50 to the Fayetteville State Broncos on the road Wednesday.
Rita James led the Lady Bears (4-5, 0-2) with nine points and five assists. Randria Anderson tacked on 12 points and three steals and Brittiney Seymour chipped in as well with seven points and two blocks off the bench.
Mariah Holder pulled down two offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Shaw, grabbing 12 boards and turning them into 10 second chance points.
The Shaw defense held Fayetteville State shooters to only 39.1 percent from the field, including 21.7 percent from three-point range.
How It Happened
After falling behind 9-7, Shaw went on a 5-0 run with 5:48 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Anderson, to take a 12-9 lead. Fayetteville State then responded to tie things up at 16-16 heading into the second quarter. Shaw did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring eight of its 16 points close to the basket.
The Broncos then took control in the second quarter and the Lady Bears entered haltime behind 31-25.
Fayetteville State continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 33-25 advantage before Shaw went on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a three from Makenzie Pollard, to trim its deficit to 33-31 with 7:56 to go in the third. Fayetteville State countered and stretched its lead to 43-34 heading into the fourth. Shaw knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its nine total points.
Fayetteville State kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 60-43 advantage before Shaw went on a 5-0 run, finished off by James' three, to shrink the deficit to 60-48 with 1:36 to go in the contest. Fayetteville State responded and outscored the Lady Bears the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 64-50. Shaw took advantage of four Fayetteville State turnovers in the quarter, scoring five points off of those takeaways.
