Third quarter costly as Lady Bears fall to Palm Beach Atlantic

BOCA RATON, FL --The Shaw women's basketball team went into the half tied 35-35 with Palm Beach Atlantic, but could not take control in the second half and fell 74-53 to the Sailfish at de Hoernle Sports & Cultural Center Saturday.

The Lady Bears (4-6) had two players score in double figures, led by Brittiney Seymour, who had 15 points. Tanayja London tacked on 13 points and four steals and Inari Jones added four points, seven rebounds and four steals.

Rita James pulled down two offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Shaw, grabbing 11 boards and turning them into 11 second chance points.

Shaw forced 26 Palm Beach Atlantic turnovers. The Bears turned those takeaways into 25 points on the offensive end of the floor. Jones' four steals led the way for Shaw.

How It Happened

After falling behind 12-4, Shaw went on a 9-0 run with 4:04 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Seymour, to take a 13-12 lead. The Bears then maintained that lead and entered the quarter break with a 15-14 advantage. Shaw did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 10 of its 15 points close to the basket.

Palm Beach Atlantic rallied to take a 27-19 lead before Shaw went on a 6-0 run starting at the 4:54 mark in the second period to narrow its deficit to 27-25. The Lady Bears then kept gaining ground and tied the contest at 35-35 heading into halftime. Shaw dominated in the paint, scoring 12 of its 20 points close to the basket.

Palm Beach Atlantic proceeded to take over in the third quarter and the Bears entered the fourth trailing 58-41. Shaw played well near the basket, scoring four of its six points in the paint.

Palm Beach Atlantic kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 68-42 advantage before Shaw went on a 7-0 run, finished off by Makenzie Pollard's layup, to shrink the deficit to 68-49 with 4:27 to go in the contest. Palm Beach Atlantic responded and outscored the Lady Bears the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 74-53. Shaw took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring eight of its 12 points in the paint.
