Shaw falls 82-80 to Claflin on buzzer-beater

ORANGEBURG, S.C. --The Shaw men's basketball team fell to the Claflin Panthers 82-80 on the road Saturday on Bryson Dennis' buzzer-beating shot with just one second left on the clock.

The Bears (5-6, 0-1) had five players score in double figures, led by DJ Thomas, who had 17 points and five assists. Shayne Siago added 11 points off of the bench and Denari Garrett chipped in as well with 10 points and three steals off of the bench.

Shaw out-rebounded Claflin 32-25 in Saturday's game, led by Amir Waddell's nine boards. The Bears also collected 13 offensive rebounds and scored 17 second chance points.

The Shaw defense was a problem in Saturday's game, forcing 16 Claflin turnovers while committing 10. Those takeaways turned into 24 points on the other end of the floor. Garrett's three steals led the way individually for the Bears.

How It Happened

Shaw struggled out of the gate, falling behind 42-26 heading into halftime.

Claflin kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 56-38 advantage before Shaw went on a 7-0 run to shrink the deficit to 56-45 with 12:20 to go in the contest. The Bears kept their comeback going, holding the lead with 02:36 left to play, but Claflin managed to hold on for the 82-80 win. Shaw capitalized on 11 Claflin turnovers in the period, collecting 21 points off those turnovers.
