FAYETTEVILLE, NC --Shayne Siago scored 23 points and Jeremiah Pope had 18 more, but the Bears fell to the Fayetteville State Broncos 71-66 on the road Wednesday.
The Bears (4-7, 0-2) had two players score in double figures, led by Siago, who had 23 points. Pope tacked on 18 points and Dj Thomas added eight points and two steals.
How It Happened
After jumping out to an 18-16 advantage, Shaw went on a 7-0 run with 6:09 left in the first half to increase its lead to 25-16. The Bears then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 34-32 advantage. Shaw did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 20 of its 34 points close to the basket.
Fayetteville State proceeded to take a 38-36 lead before Shaw went on a 7-0 run, finished off by Jamari Roberts' layup, to seize a 43-38 lead with 12:57 to go in the contest. Fayetteville State re-asserted control, outscoring the Bears 33-23 the rest of the way to hand Shaw the 71-66 loss. Shaw got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 14 of its 32 total points.
