Box Score 1 Raleigh, NC – The Shaw University Bears extended their winning streak to a season-long three games as the Bears held off a ferocious comeback to defeat the Bowie State University Bulldogs 73-62 Saturday evening inside historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
Shaw (7-5, 3-3 CIAA, 3-0 North) raced out to an 8-2 lead forcing an early Bowie State (5-12, 3-3 CIAA, 1-1 North) timeout less than two minutes into the action. The Bears lead grew to 21-12 with a three-point basket from Jason Robinson with just over 11 minutes left in the half. Robinson sent the Bulldogs into another timeout after his drive and finish with 6:55 left gave the Bears a 30-14 lead.
The Bears kept the pressure on with a Doriuntas Barnes drive and finish extending the Shaw lead to 40-22 with 2:30 left before intermission. Robinson wasn't finished as the Bears ran their offense to perfection leading to a corner three just before the buzzer giving the Bears the 46-28 lead at halftime.
Shaw's lead grew to 50-28 with a basket inside from Izeah Parker. A quick BSU spurt trimmed the Shaw lead to 52-37 forcing the Bears to call a timeout with 14:03 left in the game. Baskets from Justus Baldwin and Gabriel Joseph-Bryan pushed the Shaw lead back up 56-37. Another Bulldogs run cut the Shaw lead to 58-43 with 9:05 on the clock. The Shaw lead shrunk down to just seven with 6:07 remaining. A layup from Brandon Faison stopped the BSU run making the score 60-52 in favor of the Bears.
A Baldwin steal and layup made the score 62-57 before following up the play with another steal and two free throws giving Shaw a seven-point lead with 2:20 remaining. Barnes split a pair following two free throws from Caleb Simmons to make the score 67-57. Denari Garrett added a pair with just over one minute left to help ice the game sending Shaw to their third straight win.
Baldwin led Shaw on offense with 16 points and 7 rebounds which were both team-high for the Bears. Robinson followed with 10 points and 5 rebounds. 11 different Bears scored during the contest. Shaw also shot a season-high 80% from the free-throw line.
Shaw will now hit the road for two straight games with their first contest being Wednesday, January 26 as the Bears take on Lincoln (PA). Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
