Box Score RALEIGH, N.C - The Shaw University softball team gave a good Claflin University squad all it could handle in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader, but the Lady Bears ultimately dropped both games of the twin-bill. Claflin took game one 5-2 before shutting out the Lady Bears 8-0 in the finale at Worthdale Park.
The result leaves the Lady Bears 0-6 on the year while Claflin improves to 8-1.
Starting pitcher, sophomore Brianna Smith (Conyers, GA), took the circle for the Lady Bears pitching two complete games. She posted six strikeouts, six walks, and allowed nine earned runs on the day. At bat, Smith added an RBI on a single to right field that brought home senior Karla Sosa (Brownsville, TX).
In the opener, the Lady Bears struck first in the third inning to own a 1-0 lead over the Lady Panthers. Freshman Jordan Brandon (High Point, NC) singled to right field sending junior Destiny Beckham (Stone Mountain, GA) home.
Claflin leveled the playing field in the fifth with a big hit from Camryn Hollis. The Lady Panthers added four more runs in the following inning to take a 5-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth.
Smith answered quickly with an RBI single, but it was not enough to get the Lady Bears back into the game. The final score ended 5-2 as SU posted six hits and one error.
During the nightcap, Claflin plated two runs in the opening inning - that offensive momentum would carry over in the second with the Lady Panthers charting six runs. Unable to get anything going offensively, Shaw was held to just two hits in game two as the Lady Panthers capitalized on an alarming seven errors from the Lady Bears defense.
