Box Score Newberry, S.C. - The Shaw University's men's soccer team won for the first time this season, earning a 2-0 victory against Newberry College at the Smith Road Complex Saturday afternoon. The win improves the Bears to 1-2-1 overall while the Wolves open the 2021 season 0-1.
Shaw played a dominant first-half performance against Newberry, scoring two late goals to show for it. The first goal came from a breakthrough in the 39th minute through a low-driven shot by freshman Nico Couropmitree (Bolingbrook, IL), his first goal of the season. Minutes later, freshman Gianluca Evers (Brunswick, Germany) also scored his first goal of the season with a high shot left of the keeper in the 42nd minute.
SU totaled seven shots and forced two saves in the half.
The Bears had a chance to extend their lead in the second half through a penalty kick from freshman Andrew Camilo (London, England) in the 79th minute, but a brave effort for the Wolves' goalkeeper denied Camilo.
The defense did all they could to keep a clean sheet after facing periods of pressure from the home team. Freshman goalkeeper Juan Ramirez (Fort Myers, FL) made all six of his saves in the second half insuring that Shaw would receive the victory.
The Bears will continue its road skid with another trip at Division I - Elon on Tuesday, Feb. 22 with a late kickoff slated for 7 p.m.
