MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. — Shaw University opened the 2026 men's soccer season with a 7-1 setback against the University of Mount Olive on Tuesday evening at Amon Field.
The Bears (0-1) wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as Janis Brater found the back of the net just 39 seconds into the contest to give Shaw an early 1-0 advantage. Mount Olive answered in the 16th minute before Kevin Jimenez scored twice to send the Trojans into halftime with a 3-1 lead.
Mount Olive pulled away during the second half, scoring four times over the final 16 minutes. Shaw finished with seven shots, including three on goal, while Mount Olive recorded 27 shots with 16 on target. The Bears also earned five corner kicks compared to seven for the Trojans.
Brater, Trey Philpot and Zion Aberdeen each put a shot on goal for Shaw, with Aberdeen leading the Bears with three total attempts. Goalkeepers Alessandro Martinez and Jayden Young combined for nine saves in the contest.
The Bears are back in action Thursday, September 3 as they head to Louisburg College. Kickoff is set for 3 PM.
