CARY, N.C. — The Shaw University men's soccer team battled William Peace University for 90 minutes but came up just short in a 1-0 nonconference loss Sunday evening at WakeMed Soccer Park.
William Peace (3-3-1) scored the match's only goal in the fourth minute. Topher Johnson finished a pass from Eder Acevedo Delgado at the 3:50 mark to give the Pacers an early advantage.
Shaw (0-7) quickly settled into the match and created several opportunities to equalize. Ensa Manneh forced William Peace goalkeeper Dallas Story into a save in the fourth minute before Gaston Amuri placed an attempt on goal in the 14th minute.
The Bears nearly pulled even in the 21st minute when Lynwood Philpot's shot struck the left post. Shaw entered halftime trailing 1-0 despite placing two of its four first-half attempts on target.
Manneh provided another scoring opportunity shortly after the break, forcing Story to make a save in the 49th minute. Shaw continued pressing throughout the second half while its defense kept the Pacers off the scoreboard.
Christoforos Theokli made three saves in goal for the Bears and did not allow another goal after William Peace's early strike.
Shaw made one final push during the closing minutes. Sandro Khorbaladze placed a shot on target in the 88th minute, but Story recorded his fourth save of the match. The Bears earned a corner kick moments later but could not produce the tying goal.
William Peace held an 11-6 advantage in total shots and a 10-3 edge in corner kicks. Both teams placed four shots on goal. Manneh led Shaw with two shots on target, while Amuri finished with two total attempts and one shot on goal.
