Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. - An eventful match took place Wednesday afternoon at the WRAL Soccer Complex between Shaw University and Chowan University with the match ending 3-2 in favor of the visitors from Murfreesboro, N.C.
A rocky start set Shaw (0-2-1) off on the wrong foot early on as miscommunication between defenders forced an arrant pass in the box that led to an easy tap-in finish for the Hawks making the score 1-0 inside just 10 minutes of play.
Shaw slowly got their way back into the match and were able to capitalize on a set piece in the 40th minute when freshman Levin Gerhardt's (Altenkirchen, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany) cross struck the post and junior Shamari Henderson (Raleigh, NC) was able to flush a header on the rebound to even the score (1-1).
With the score tied at one apiece at intermission, Shaw came out of the break having to absorb pressure from the Hawks attack. A corner kick led to a header from the Hawks' London Williams to give CU a 2-1 edge at the 50th minute.
After back-and-forth play from both teams, the Hawks scored again at the 73rd minute to extend their lead 3-1 over Shaw. Despite the deficit, the Bears continued to show fight highlighted by a low shot from sophomore Ben Zuhlke (Rostock, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany) off a pass from junior Sam Lister (Northallerton, England) to pull SU within one (3-2).
Shaw continued to press and had an opportunity for an equalizer in the 83rd minute but the goal was ruled out due to an offside call as Chowan was able to close out the contest with the win over the Bears.
For the contest, Shaw totaled four corner kicks, nine shots including three on goal while the Hawks accounted for 22 total shots and eight on goal.
Up next, Shaw will travel to Newberry on Saturday, Feb. 20th with a kickoff slated for 4:30 p.m.
