Bears Run Past Bruins 91-64

Raleigh, NC – It was all Shaw from the tip as the Bears hosted their first home game since February of 2020 defeating the Carolina University Bruins 91-64 in a non-conference matchup inside historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.

 

With the win, the Bears even their record at 2-2 overall while the Bruins fall to 5-3 on the season.

 

Shaw jumped out to an early 13-5 lead with 15:40 left in the first half with the help of three-point shots from Rayshawn Neal, Justus Baldwin, and Corey Rutherford. Tyler Williams added a three from the top of the key to give the Bears a 19-8 lead with 12:05 remaining before the break. Another Williams three pushed the Shaw lead to 24-10 forcing a Bruins timeout with just over nine minutes on the clock.

 

The three-point shots continued to flow as Baldwin added another three to make the score 30-12. Caleb Simmons finished in the post to give Shaw a twenty-point lead at 38-18 lead with 5:10 left in the first half. Neal added to the Bears lead with a steal and three-point play extending the Shaw lead.

 

The fouls began to mount against the Bears allowing the Bruins to cut the Shaw lead to 17 before a Neal three-pointer halted the Bruins run.  Neal added another three as the buzzer sounded to make the Shaw lead 53-30 at the half.

 

Shaw opened the half on an 8-0 run to make the score 61-30 in favor of the Bears before Shaw pushed its lead to thirty at the first media timeout of the half. The Bears lead grew to 78-42 with 9:09 remaining in the game. Shaw went deep into their bench gaining game experience for the roster with the Bears ahead 82-51 with just under five minutes left in the game. Both teams traded baskets the rest of the contest with the Bears pulling out the 91-64 win.

 

Neal paced the Bears with 16 points followed by Baldwin with 13 and Williams with 12. 13 different Bears recorded a point during the contest. Shaw finished 38-73 from the floor including connecting on a season-high 11 three-point baskets.

 

The Bears will hit the floor for one last game before the Thanksgiving break as they travel to Sumter, SC to face Morris Tuesday, November 23. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
