Box Score 1 Institute, WV – Free throws were the difference in Saturday's contest as the Shaw University Bears fell to host West Virginia State 93-82 on the second day of the Earl Lloyd Classic played in Institute, WV.
The Bears record drops to 1-1 on the early season while the Yellow Jackets are now 2-0.
The contest was won at the free-throw line as WVSU shot 25-33 for 75% compared to just 15 attempts for the Bears while making eight of those. Shaw outshot WVSU in overall shooting on the floor 55% to 50% while the Yellow Jackets held a slim lead in rebounds 35-28.
Caleb Simmons led Shaw with a career-high 25 points and seven rebounds. Corey Rutherford provided a spark off the bench adding 15 points while going 5-7 from beyond the arc. Rayshawn Neal and Justus Baldwin rounded out the double-figure scorers with 12 and 10 points each.
The Bears continue their season-opening road trip as they travel to Columbia, SC to face the Benedict Tigers on Tuesday, November 16. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m.
