ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – On the final day of its round-up swing, the Shaw University (1-7) softball team split a pair of contests to the Lincoln (Pa.) Senior Kiana Rogers (Fort Atkinson, WI) had a standout performance in the day's first game to seal the Lady Bears first win of the season. Rogers went 2-for-3 with two runs driven in and a run scored as Shaw held a 10-7 frame over the Lions in hits.

While both teams were scoreless for three innings, Shaw got on the board first in the bottom fourth when senior Alex Masnica (Chicago, IL) tripled to right field, followed by single's from freshman Timia Thompson (Richmond, VA) and senior Raquel Kellow (Conroe, TX) and a triple from Rogers that captivated the Lady Bears three runs.

Shaw took advantage of LUPA's miscues to add on two more runs in the bottom fifth before plating one run in the bottom sixth on a double from senior Christine Ngeve that brought home freshman Victoria Ortiz (Tucson, AZ). Freshman pitcher Joan Wendt (Jacksonville, NC) got her first win of her collegiate career, allowing one earned run, three strikeouts in seven innings of work.

Shaw dropped its final game of the round-up, 9-0 in five innings to Chowan. The Lady Bears hung in early with CU, trailing 3-0 after three complete innings but the Hawks racked up six runs in the bottom fourth to shorten the game.

The Lady Bears tallied just two hits with both Masnica and senior Taija Bailey (Greensboro, NC) going 1-for-2 at the plate.

Wendt allowed eight earned runs, walking five in four innings of work on the mound.

Shaw will look to take a couple of days off to regroup for its home opener against Livingstone College on Mar. 30 at Worthdale Park. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
