LADY BEARS SLIP PAST SOUTHERN WESLEYAN 1-0

Box Score

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University women's soccer team battled rain, strong winds and a strong defensive effort from visiting Southern Wesleyan University to slip past the Warriors 1-0 Wednesday afternoon at the WRAL Soccer Complex in Raleigh, N.C.

Shaw improves its record to 5-7 overall on the season while Southern Wesleyan falls to 4-5-2.

Both teams struggled early, maintaining possession of the ball dealing with the horrid weather conditions. As the rain cleared, pressure and more clean looks from each team were accounted for.

Shaw broke the ice for the first goal which would also prove to be the game winner as leading goal scorer sophomore Jasa Curry (Elicott City, MD) took a touch pass from freshman Fenja Soeth (Bokel, Germany) and directed a kick into the right corner for the goal putting the Lady Bears ahead 1-0. It would be the only shot on goal for the half for Shaw.

The Lady Bears were credited with 9 shots total with eight of those being after the break while Southern Wesleyan tallied four shots for the contest. Senior keeper Caylie Hartman (Commerece, City, CO) collected the two save shutout victory.

Shaw returns to action Saturday, Oct. 26 as they travel to Salem (W.V). Kickoff is slated for 12 p.m.
