Lady Bears Fall at Barton in Abbreviated Match

WILSON, N.C. — The Shaw University women's soccer team battled Barton College on Wednesday afternoon before falling 2-0 in an abbreviated nonconference contest at the Bulldogs Athletic Complex.

The match was called with 16:33 remaining in regulation, ending play at the 73:27 mark. Shaw moved to 0-2 on the season, while Barton improved to 2-1.

Barton opened the scoring in the 13th minute when Lilly Moss collected a free ball and finished into the lower left corner to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 advantage. Shaw continued to create opportunities, with Nala Baker putting a pair of shots on goal during the opening half and Jasmine Rennie and Sophie Ranyard also testing the Barton defense.

The Lady Bears entered halftime trailing 1-0 after producing five shots and four corner kicks in the opening 45 minutes. Barton recorded 12 first-half shots but Shaw's defense and goalkeeper Alexis Stephens helped keep the deficit at one.

Barton extended its lead just 1:41 into the second half when Kayla Loughrey scored off an assist from Julia Morales to make it 2-0.

Shaw continued to push forward following the second goal. Camila Prieto placed a shot on frame in the 56th minute, while Rennie followed with another attempt less than a minute later.

The Lady Bears finished with seven shots, including five on goal. Baker led Shaw with two shots on target, while Rennie recorded two attempts. Prieto and Ranyard each added a shot on goal.

Stephens and Olivia Ankrom split time in goal for Shaw and combined for eight saves. Stephens made four stops during her 37:36 of action, while Ankrom added four saves over the final 35:51.

Barton finished with 23 total shots and 10 on goal, while Shaw earned four corner kicks in the contest.

The Lady Bears return to the pitch Sunday, September 6th as they travel to Fayetteville, NC to take on Methodist in a 3 PM start.
