Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. – Shaw University men's soccer fell to Coker College after the Cobras found the golden goal in the 93rd minute of play on Tuesday night at the MAC. After the Bears found the early goal, Coker was able to take advantage of a pair of man-up situations to complete the victory over Shaw.
The loss dips the Bears to 3-3-1 on the season while Coker improves to 2-3-0 overall.
Shaw controlled the tone early after freshman forward Malte Ruether (Tucson, AZ) scored his first goal of his collegiate career at the 29th minute on a giveaway in the box. Through the first half, the Cobras held a 7-6 advantage in shots but the Bears were responsible for a 3-1 frame in saves.
Coker found the equalizer in the second half when Christian Provenzano fired one close range from the right side off the left side into the back of the net.
Both teams would finish the rest of regulation scoreless as neither teams could break the tie and as a result, head into overtime.
Nearly three minutes into the extra period, Giancarlo Martinez ran up the right side and shot a goal from the end line that angled to the far post of the back of the net for the game's winning goal.
The Bears ended the night with a 13-8 disadvantage in shots and a 7-2 ratio in shots-on-goal. Freshman goalkeeper Patrick Richter (Dusseldorf, Germany) made two saves in 93:09 minute setback.
Shaw will hit the road for the next eight games, beginning with a clash with Belmont Abbey on Oct. 1 at 3 p.m.
