SHAW SWEEPS LIVINGSTONE BEHIND A DOMINATING TEAM PERFORMANCE

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SALISBURY, N.C. – The Shaw University women's softball team earned a two-game sweep over Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) opponent Livingstone College (0-13, 0-7 CIAA), winning the doubleheader by a score of 21-0 in game one and a 22-1 masterful performance in game two.

Offensively, Shaw combined for 47 hits, 43 runs, 42 RBI and two home runs in the two games. Junior Kiana Rogers (Fort Atkinson, WI) went 5-of-5 at the plate, three RBIs and five runs scored while senior Brittany Kline (Choctaw Beach, FL) finished 4-of-4 with six RBIs and one run scored in the first game.

The Lady Bears opened up the day's first game with three runs in the first inning to take an early 3-0 lead over LC. In the top of the second, Shaw broke through with seven runs led off by a single from senior Frances Perry (Burlington, NJ). Redshirt-sophomore Taija Bailey (Greensboro, NC) singled followed by senior Shaniqua Fahie (British Virgin Islands) who recorded two RBIs on a single that scored Perry and Bailey. By then, the score would favor Shaw, 10-0.

A sacrifice fly out to centerfield from junior Christine Ngeve (Greensboro, NC) allowed Rogers to score and then Kline hit a singled to bring home senior Tori Hale (Moreno Valley, CA) to put the Lady Bears ahead 12-0 in the top of the third inning. Bailey hit her first career home run in the top of the fourth in route to the mercy rule of five innings.

While the offense was spectacular, perhaps even more impressive was the combined pitching efforts of sophomore Amanda Ortiz (Tucson, AZ) and Perry who surrendered just two hits and combined for seven strikeouts.

In the second game, the explosive offensive output from the Lady Bears continued. The mercy rule came into play again after five innings, as Shaw topped Livingstone by a score of 22-1 that featured five runs in the top of the first, one in the second, six in the third, eight in the fourth and two in the fifth on 27 hits. Ortiz went 5-of-5 from the plate, scoring four runs and two RBI while Fahie drove in four runs with three RBIs in a 4-5 performance. Kline would homer the Lady Bears third home run of the year in the top of fourth, she also finished 3-5 at bat with two RBIs and three runs.

Perry earned the win in the circle, allowing just one run on one hit and striking out two.

The wins put Shaw (8-12) at 6-2 in the CIAA. The Lady Bears will return to action on Wednesday, Apr. 11 at Johnson C. Smith in division doubleheader scheduled for 3 p.m.
