SOFTBALL PICKS UP ANOTHER SPLIT DAY TWO OF CIAA ROUNDUP

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. On day two of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) round-up, the Shaw University women's softball team finished 1-1 on Saturday afternoon at the South Park Sports Complex. Shaw defeated Elizabeth City State, 11-3 in six innings but then faced a 10-0 setback to Chowan in the nightcap.

With the split, Shaw stands 4-12 overall and 2-2 in the league standings.

Sophomore pitcher/outfielder Amanda Ortiz (Tucson, AZ) finished the day 2-6 to lead the offense. Senior pitcher Sheniqua Fahie (British Virgin Island) earned her first win in the circle this season, allowing six hits, three earned runs and striking out six batters against ECSU.

After both teams scored one run each in the first inning between the Lady Vikings, Shaw scattered one in the bottom of the second led by single to left field from senior outfielder Erica Kiessling (Fuquay-Varina, NC) whom would eventually earn a run on a passed ball.

The Lady Bears shattered four runs in the bottom of the fourth, including a double from senior second baseman Brittany Kline (Choctaw Beach, FL) that scored Kiessling, a bunt single from senior outfielder Julia Slade (Greensboro, NC) that led to Kline scoring and a double from Fahie that brought home Slade. Senior first baseman Zahrea Lewis (Savannah, GA) singled to right field to right field that allowed Fahie to score giving Shaw the 6-1 lead.

ECSU plated two runs in the top of the fifth thanks to a homerun from D'Asyha Wilson to trim Shaw's lead 6-3 but the Lady Bears added two more to the scoreboard on a single from Kiessling and double from senior pitcher Frances Perry (Burlington, NJ) to secure the win.

Against Chowan, the Lady Bears trailed 4-0 in the opening inning due to two miscues. The Hawks hit two home runs in the bottom of the second to extend their lead 6-0 over Shaw before finishing off the stanza with one more to hold a 7-0 frame over the Lady Bears.

The Hawks who channeled five total homeruns during the game, capped off the win with two runs in the bottom of the third and one in the fourth. Shaw got close to scoring on occasions but was unable to capitalize, leaving runners on base six times.

Ortiz suffered the loss for the Lady Bears pitching unit, she allowed 12 hits, eight earned runs and walked three.

The Lady Bears will look to conclude the CIAA roundup with a 9 a.m. game against Bowie State and 11 a.m. contest with Virginia Union on Sunday.
