Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University men's soccer team pulled away from Piedmont International 5-1 Wednesday afternoon at the MAC Sports and Entertainment Complex. The second straight win for Shaw improved the Bears to 7-8-1 to close out the 2018 season. The Bruins drop to 4-10 on the year.
The five unanswered goals from Shaw matched the second highest (15 vs. Mid Atlantic Christian) for the Bears this season.
The Bears scored the match's first goal in the 14th minute of play on a shot from senior Thilo Wilke (Karlstadt, Germany) assisted by senior Thiago Sooma (Sao Paulo, Brazil). Just before halftime, junior Carl Kennedy (Bolton, England) recorded a header off a corner kick from Sooma to give Shaw a 2-0 lead at the break.
Shaw exploded for three goals to start the second half of the match. Freshman Malte Ruether (Cologne, Germany) ignited the 3-0 spurt for the Bears when he scored his sixth goal of the season from Wilke with just 22 seconds into the second half. Freshman Mortiz Lotzen (Hochberg, Germany) got a pass from sophomore Antonio Nelson (Trinidad and Tobago) before taking his defender one-on-one for a shot in the net at the 56th minute and then Wilke iced things with his 17th goal on the season and 31st for his career, becoming the programs all-time leader in goals scored.
The Bruins would score its lone goal off a free kick from Brayan Gomez at the 89th minute.
Shaw recorded 24 shots and 17 on goal led by Kennedy who registered six shots and four on goal. Junior Patrick Richter (Dusseldorf, Germany) earned the win, collecting one save in 90:00 of work.
