RALEIGH, N.C. – Shaw University men's soccer showcased its depth on Monday afternoon as the Bears leaned on a rotation of reserves to cruise past Carolina Christian, 4-1, at WRAL Soccer Park.
Shaw wasted no time setting the tone. Freshman forward Julius Jones opened the scoring within the first ten minutes of play off an assist from Cameron Thomas. Defender Trevor Boothe added two goals in the opening half, including a strike set up by Ezekiel Kwandhor-Mensah that pushed the Bears' lead to 3-0 at the break.
Carolina Christian got on the board in the 60th minute courtesy of Joshua Garcia, but the Bears' defense and goalkeeping tandem held firm the rest of the way. Alex Reyes sealed the match late in the 89th minute with his first goal of the season, assisted by goalkeeper Joshua Morgan.
The Bears outshot Carolina Christian 13–5 overall, including an 8–3 edge on target. Morgan and Carlos Granado split time in goal, with Morgan stopping two shots in the first half and Granado closing out the match.
With the win, Shaw improves to 2-3-1 on the season.
