BEARS SOCCER FALLS TO BELMONT ABBEY, 2-1

Box Score

BELMONT, N.C. – The Shaw University men's soccer team were edged by Belmont Abbey College, 2-1 Monday afternoon at the Alumni Field. The setback is the third consecutive loss for the Bears who dip to 3-4-1 on the year while the Crusaders now stand to 4-4-1 for the year.

After a scoreless first half with the Bears at a disadvantage in shots at 5-4, BAC took the lead at the 57th minute after a goal from Sam Hatoff. Shaw recovered when senior Thiago Sooma (Sao Paulo, Brazil) found the back of the net at the 61st mark to even the score at 1-all but eight minutes later, the Crusaders broke the tie with a game-winning goal from Aaron Madision as the Bears tallied four shots down the stretch but could not score again.

For the contest, Shaw and Belmont Abbey both registered a total of 13 shots. Sooma finished the game with a team-best three shots and one on goal while three different Bears tallied two shots each. Defensively, freshman Theo Delaleu (Les Essarts Le Roi, France) recorded five saves in the loss.

Shaw will be back on the field on Wednesday, Oct. 3 at Georgia Southwestern for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff.
