Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University men's basketball team fell in the hands of Virginia State University in an 88-67 decision on Wednesday night in Spaulding Gymnasium in CIAA action. The Bears dropped to 9-13 overall and 6-5 in the CIAA, while the Trojans improve to 15-4 overall and post a 10-1 mark in league standings.
Kevin Williams led all scorers with 18 points, seven rebounds and three assists, while Elijah Moore added 16 points and seven rebounds for VSU.
Struggling to find their groove in the opening tip, Shaw allowed VSU to establish an 11-4 lead in the first four minutes of the contest. A 3-pointer by Larry Richardson, II (Garner, NC) sparked a 9-2 run for the Bears to tie the game at 13-all at the 10:55 mark.
The Trojans punched in a 14-5 run to lead by seven points with 4:28 showing on the game clock before going into the locker room with a 14-point lead (37-23) at intermission.
The Bears shot just 32-percent (8-25) from the floor compared to the Trojans 48.5-percent (16-33).
Shaw got within 13-points in the second half but that would be closest the Bears would get for the remainder of the contest as VSU cruised to the victory.
David Madol (Manchester, NH) scored 12 points and six rebounds, while Richardson, II and Akeem Echols (Baltimore, MD) contributed 10 points apiece in the loss.
Shaw will return to Spaulding on Saturday, Feb. 6th to host Livingstone College with a tip scheduled for 4 p.m.
