Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University men's basketball suffered a heartbreaking double-overtime loss to cross-town rival Saint Augustine's University, 93-90 in a crowded Spaulding Gymnasium on Saturday evening.
The loss snaps the Bears two-game win-streak and drops Shaw to 11-15 overall and 8-6 in the CIAA, while the Falcons improves to 10-14 overall and 5-9 in the league. SAU now sits in second place with the victory, while Shaw stands in third place in the Southern Division race.
Madol scored a team-high 26 points and six rebounds, while Larry Richardson, II (Garner, NC) scored 20 points and grabbed six rebounds as well. Joell Hopkins, Jr. (Raleigh, NC) added 12 points and seven rebounds, while both Jamar Cooper (Petersburg, VA) and Akeem Echols (Baltimore, MD) finished with 11 points each.
Anthony Gaskins led all players with 27 points and 12 rebounds, while Quincy January added 27 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Nick Moyer and Keith Crawford contributed 12 and 11 points, respectively.
In the first overtime period, Echols hit two-free throws with nine seconds remaining to give the Bears the two-point lead (84-82) but a missed 3-pointer by Gaskins followed by an offensive put back from Nick Tennell sent the game into double overtime.
Later, a jumper by Richardson, II put Shaw up five-points (89-84) with 1:40 left but the Falcons cut the lead with two-free throws each by Gaskins and Tennell to get SAU within one-point as 27 seconds show left on the clock. The next possession down, Tennell was sent to the line as he would sink two more free-throws to tie the contest for the thirteenth time of the night.
Tied 90-all, Shaw had an opportunity to take the lead but the Bears failed to capitalize after missing two crucial free-throws with 27 seconds remaining. The Falcons captured the defensive rebound off the Bears missed free-throw and Gaskins came down to drain a 3-pointer at the buzzer to win the game.
Shaw will return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 17th when they host Fayetteville State University for Senior Day. The Bears loss to the Broncos 74-68 back on Jan. 27th. Tip-off is slated for 8 p.m.
